Most of our clients come through referrals, which tells you something. We're not perfect - nobody is - but we'll shoot straight with you about your options and work hard to get the outcome you need.

Why Immigration and International Business Law?

Because the world's getting smaller, but the paperwork's getting bigger.

I started this practice after spending way too many years at a massive corporate firm where clients were basically case numbers. Don't get me wrong - big firms have their place - but there's something deeply satisfying about actually knowing the people you're helping and understanding what's really at stake for them.

Immigration law is personal. It's about families, dreams, and building a life somewhere new. International business law? That's about growth, opportunity, and connecting economies. When you combine those two areas, you're dealing with real human stories backed by complex legal frameworks.

We've worked with tech startups bringing in specialized talent from India, families reuniting after years apart, manufacturing companies navigating CUSMA regulations, and everything in between. Each case is different, and that's exactly what makes this work worth doing.

What We Actually Do

We don't try to be everything to everyone. These are the areas where we've built real depth over the years, and where we can genuinely add value to your situation.

Immigration Law & Visa Applications

Whether you're coming to Canada for work, study, family reunification, or permanent residence, the process can feel overwhelming. We've handled hundreds of visa applications - from Express Entry to family sponsorships, work permits to citizenship applications.

Here's the thing: immigration rules change constantly. Like, seriously, sometimes we wake up to new IRCC updates that completely shift strategies. That's why staying current isn't optional in this field.

  • Express Entry & Provincial Nominee Programs
  • Work Permits & LMIA Support
  • Family Sponsorship
  • Student Visas & Post-Graduation Pathways

Corporate Law & Business Formation

Starting a business or expanding across borders? The legal structure you choose matters more than most people realize. We help entrepreneurs and established companies set up the right framework from day one.

Corporate law isn't just about filing paperwork - it's about protecting your interests, minimizing liability, and setting yourself up for sustainable growth. We've incorporated businesses ranging from solo consultancies to multi-million dollar ventures.

International Trade Agreements

Cross-border commerce comes with its own rulebook. Between CUSMA, CPTPP, and bilateral agreements, there's a lot to navigate. We help businesses understand their obligations and opportunities in the international marketplace.

Trade law isn't glamorous, but getting it wrong can cost you serious money. We've worked with importers, exporters, and service providers to structure deals that comply with trade regulations while maximizing benefits.

  • CUSMA/USMCA Compliance
  • Import/Export Regulations
  • Customs & Tariff Classification
  • Trade Agreement Utilization

Employment & Labour Law

Employment relationships can get complicated fast. Whether you're an employer trying to stay compliant or an employee dealing with workplace issues, understanding your rights and obligations is crucial.

We've seen our share of employment disputes that could've been avoided with proper documentation and clear policies. Prevention beats litigation every time, though we're ready for both.

  • Employment Contract Drafting

Regulatory Compliance Consulting

Regulations are everywhere, and they're constantly evolving. From privacy laws to industry-specific requirements, staying compliant isn't optional - it's essential for protecting your business.

We help businesses build compliance frameworks that actually work in practice, not just on paper. It's about creating systems that protect you without grinding operations to a halt.

  • Privacy Law Compliance (PIPEDA)
  • Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Programs
  • Industry-Specific Regulations

Discuss Your Case

How We Work

No mysterious processes or legal jargon that leaves you confused. Here's what working with us actually looks like.

1

Initial Consultation

First, we talk. Usually on the phone or via video call. You tell us what's going on, we ask questions, and we figure out if we're the right fit. This usually takes 30-45 minutes, and yeah, there's a consultation fee - but it's credited toward your retainer if you hire us.

2

Strategy Development

Once you're on board, we dig deep into your situation. We'll request documents, do our research, and map out a strategy. This isn't cookie-cutter stuff - every case gets individual attention because, well, every case is different.

3

Execution

This is where we do the actual work - drafting documents, filing applications, negotiating agreements, whatever your case requires. We keep you in the loop through regular updates. No radio silence for weeks on end.

4

Follow Through

Once we've achieved the objective, we make sure everything's properly wrapped up. If it's an immigration case, we help with next steps. If it's corporate, we ensure ongoing compliance. The relationship doesn't just end abruptly.

Transparency matters: We'll give you a fee estimate upfront. No hidden charges or surprise bills. If something changes that affects the scope of work, we'll discuss it before moving forward. Legal services are expensive enough without adding uncertainty to the mix.

What Clients Say

We don't do fake reviews. These are real people who've worked with us, shared with their permission.

Questions People Actually Ask

We get these a lot. If your question isn't here, just call us.

Depends entirely on what you need. Immigration cases typically range from $2,500 to $15,000 depending on complexity. Corporate work might be a flat fee for incorporation (around $3,000-$5,000) or hourly for ongoing matters ($350-$500/hour). We always give you an estimate upfront after the initial consultation. No surprises.

No, and run from anyone who does. Immigration decisions are made by government officials, not lawyers. What we CAN guarantee is that we'll prepare the strongest possible application based on your circumstances, identify potential issues early, and navigate the process efficiently. Our approval rate is really high because we're selective about cases and thorough in preparation.

Varies wildly. Work permits might take 2-8 weeks depending on the stream. Express Entry PR applications are currently processing in 6-12 months. Family sponsorships can be 12-24 months. These are government processing times - we can't control them. What we DO control is getting your application submitted quickly and correctly the first time, which matters more than people realize.

Honestly? Some cases are straightforward enough to DIY if you're organized and good at following instructions. But if there's ANY complexity - prior refusals, criminal records, unclear work history, business structures - get professional help. The cost of getting it wrong (delays, refusals, missed opportunities) usually exceeds the cost of hiring someone who knows what they're doing. We've fixed a lot of DIY disasters.

Both can represent you for immigration matters. Lawyers have more extensive legal training and can handle related issues like employment disputes, corporate matters, or appeals. Consultants specialize in immigration. For straightforward immigration cases, either works. For complex situations involving multiple legal areas, a lawyer's broader expertise helps. We're lawyers, so we can handle the whole picture.

Absolutely. We work with clients worldwide. Most of our communication is via email and video calls anyway. We've handled cases for people in dozens of countries. Physical location doesn't matter much in immigration law - what matters is understanding the Canadian system, which we do.

We talk about your situation, goals, and timeline. I'll ask questions to understand the full picture, identify potential issues, and explain your options. You'll get honest feedback about your chances and what the process involves. No sugar-coating. If I think we can help, I'll explain next steps and fees. If we're not the right fit, I'll tell you that too and suggest alternatives.

Sometimes. Depends on what "urgent" means and whether we have capacity. If you've got a legitimate emergency - job offer starting soon, imminent deadline - we'll do our best to accommodate. But we won't compromise quality for speed. Rush jobs cost more because they disrupt workflow and require focused attention. Be upfront about timing when you contact us.

Ready to Move Forward?

Whether you're navigating immigration, setting up a business, or dealing with cross-border legal matters, we're here to help. No high-pressure sales tactics, no confusing legal speak - just straightforward advice and solid representation.

The consultation fee is $250 for 45 minutes. If you hire us, it comes off your retainer. You'll leave with a clear understanding of your options and what comes next.

Office hours: Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM - 5:30 PM EST

CUSMA Rules of Origin Updates

New clarifications on automotive and textile rules of origin took effect this month. If you're importing/exporting in these sectors, you need to review your tariff classifications and origin documentation.

Ontario's beneficial ownership registry requirements are now in full effect. If you've incorporated or registered a business in Ontario, you need to file this information. Fines for non-compliance start at $5,000.

Why Work With Driftelation?

Look, there are lots of lawyers out there. Here's what makes us different - and whether it matters to you.

Personal Attention

You're not getting passed off to junior associates or paralegals for everything. We're a small firm deliberately - it means I'm involved in your case directly. You'll have my cell number.

Practical Solutions

We focus on outcomes, not billable hours. Sometimes the best legal advice is "you don't need a lawyer for this." We'll tell you that if it's true, even if it costs us business.

Cross-Border Expertise

Immigration and international business naturally overlap. We handle both, which means we see angles other firms miss. Your work permit strategy should align with your business structure.

Clear Communication

No legal jargon unless necessary. We explain things in plain language and answer emails within 24 hours (usually way faster). You'll always know what's happening with your case.

Here's the reality: we can't take every case. We're selective because quality matters more than volume. If your matter falls outside our expertise or if we don't think we can add value, we'll tell you upfront and point you in the right direction. That's just how we operate.
